Once you progress far enough in the main story, players can upgrade their characters using "talents" that further expand the abilities of your spells.
The talent system is locked until the main character unlocks the map room (about LVL 13, at earliest LVL 5), though talent points are gained even if the room is unlocked starting at LVL 5. Talents are divided into five categories: spells, dark arts, core, stealth, and those pertaining to the Room of Requirement.
The original fifty (50) options that were hinted at during the gameplay reveal trailer have been reduced to forty-eight (48) at time of launch.
WARNING: be sure to view all the options available to you before spending talent points as it is impossible to respec your main character. Once they're spent they're permanent.
Card 1: Spells
Each of the most popular spells has an upgrade that, for the most part, revolves around granting an AOE version of that same spell.
- LVL 05: incendio mastery, adds aoe ring
- LVL 05: accio mastery, creates aoe pull
- LVL 05: levioso mastery, group levitation aoe at target
- LVL 05: diffindo mastery, adds pierce
- LVL 05: depulso mastery, adds aoe at caster
- LVL 05: confringo mastery, creates heat-seaking bolts
- LVL 16: bombarda mastery, adds aoe
- LVL 16: descendo mastery, adds aoe shockwave
- LVL 16: glacius mastery, target throws out ice shards
- LVL 22: transformation mastery, targets become explosive
Card 2: Dark Arts
There is no morality system in the game, so the using of dark magic even on humans--while forbidden in Harry Potter lore--seems to have zero effect on the main character. These are by far the most interesting as the curses they inflict cause tons of bonus damage.
- LVL 05: blood curse, all cursed targets share damage
- LVL 05: stunning curse, stupefy curses enemies
- LVL 05: disarming curse, expelliarmus curses enemies
- LVL 05: knockback curse, flipendo curses enemies
- LVL 16: enduring curse, increased duration of curse on target
- LVL 16: slowing curse, arresto momentum curses enemies
- LVL 16: crucio mastery, target struck while crucioed spreads curse to nearby enemy
- LVL 16: imperio mastery, controlled enemies curse target on hit
- LVL 22: curse sapper, cursed enemies grant health on defeat
- LVL 22: avada kedavra mastery, all cursed enemies share death
Card 3: Core
By far the most useful among these is "Swift", as it adds an entire new mechanic where you whip around the battlefield every time you activate dodge. The effectiveness of the heals depends on your playthrough style.
- LVL 05: basic cast, reduce cooldowns
- LVL 05: protego absorption, blocks add to ancient magic
- LVL 05: swift, new mechanic: "dodge" around battlefield in stream of white smoke
- LVL 05: spell knowledge i: +1 spell diamond
- LVL 05: spell knowledge ii: +1 spell diamond
- LVL 05: wiggenweld potency i: more healing
- LVL 05: ancient magic throw expertise: catch and throw weapons
- LVL 16: spell knowledge iii: +1 spell diamond
- LVL 16: wiggenweld potency ii: more healing
- LVL 16: stupify mastery: longer stun
- LVL 16: evasion absorption, dodging unblockable attack adds to ancient magic
- LVL 16: protego expertise: reflect two projectiles instead of one
- LVL 16: basic cast airborne absorbtion: ancient magic meter climbs faster for airborne enemies
- LVL 16: unknown
- LVL 22: protego mastery: protego releases shockwave that destroyes enemy shields
- LVL 22: stupefy expertise: stupefy causes damage
Card 4: Stealth
"Stealth" is simultaneously the easiest skill to max out and the least expansive gameplay option. At LVL 22, you can add the ability to mass petrify groups of enemies, which is insanely useful. But this takes a serious committment into a stealth build that most combat-oriented players will see as a waste of time.
- LVL 05: sense of secrecy i: enemy detection ability reduced
- LVL 05: human disguise: sprint while stealthed
- LVL 16: sense of secrecy ii: enemy detection ability reduced
- LVL 22: petrificus totalis mastery: adds aoe
Card 5: Room of Requirement
This subset of talents seems to work primarily on the plants and potions you can grow in the Room of Requirement.
