NPCs: Professors and Staff

First and foremost, Hogwarts Legacy is about attending class to become a witch or wizard. To do that, the school must provide instructors to teach you the skills you need to save the Wizarding World.

Headmaster Phineas Nigellus Black

Subject(s): Unknown

House: Slytherin

From at least 1890 to 1925, the headmaster at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is Phineas Nigellus Black--grandfather of Sirius Black III who we meet in the Harry Potter books and movies. While this was all but confirmed when one of the students described how "Professor Black couldn't be bothered" to eliminate the Daedalian Keys, his appearance in the game was officially confirmed via tweet on January 11, 2023. He is described as "cantankerous, lazy, and vain". He is also confirmed to be an unabashed pure-blood bigot.

Despite being referred to on multiple occasions as "Professor Black", it is unclear if or which classes he might teach currently or did teach in the past. The name "Nigellus" is the same name that gives us the nickname "Nigel" and is pronounced "Nigh-jel-us".

Deputy-headmistress Matilda Weasley

Subject(s): Transfiguration

House: Gryffindor

Professor Weasley is most famous for putting the sorting hat on the main character's head once they arrive at Hogwarts. However, we also saw during the gameplay reveal trailer that she is the one who shows us the Room of Requirement and during the Autodesk event that she (identified only as "Weasley") is the one who gives us the Wizard's Field Guide from the Ministry of Magic. Her full name was officially confirmed on January 12, 2023 via tweet. In the same post, she was described as stunningly good at wandwork, a former cursebreaker at the Ministry of Magic, and having highly-composed personality.

This character is voiced by actress Lesley Nicol

Professor Cuthbert Binns

Subject(s): History of Magic

Sadly, this professor is a ghost who was a teacher in his more corporeal times but died at his desk, so to speak, and then just kept right on teaching. This guy doesn't just love history, he IS history. Every description of this man seems to revolve around new and creative synonyms for the word "boring".

Professor Eleazar Fig

Subject(s): Ancient Runes

This is the professor who comes and gets the main character and brings them to Hogwarts at the start of the game. He also appears to be something of a constant companion as he is the one who interfaces with the main character when it comes to the main plot device: the goblin rebellion. There is no indication as to his relation if any to Arabella Figg, the squib who watched over Harry during the summer and then testified at his trial after Harry was forced to use magic to defend both himself and his cousin from dementors.

Professor Fig uses his position at Hogwarts as a front behind which he operates on secret missions. His office and classroom are stuffed full of research materials and other trophies from his many adventures.

Professor Mirabel Garlick

Subject(s): Herbology

We actually meet the herbology professor and hear her voice during the course of the gameplay reveal trailer, but her name and bio were not revealed until November 30, 2022. Described as sunny and flowery--because of course she is--she is described as hopelessly dedicated to her students. For what it's worth, she is the only professor, as of Jan. 12, 2023, to be identified by her sexual preference--that of a lesbian.

Among other things, Professor Garlick is known for her long-time friendship with the owner of The Three Broomsticks, Sirona Ryan.

Professor Dinah Hecat

Subject(s): Defense Against the Dark Arts (DADA)

Of all the professors we see in the gameplay reveal trailer, she is the one we see the most. She's at the table during the sorting ceremony, she chooses the main character and a companion named Sabastian to duel each other, and she saves a red haired student from a falling skull later when HE is dueling Sabastian. Her name was officially confirmed via tweet on November 22, 2022. She's described as "stern" and a former member of the Ministry of Magic. She also appears to be an action junkie.

Professor Bai Howin

Subject(s): Care of Magical Beasts

House: Hufflepuff

A pragmatic professor who understands the balance between caring for magical animals and their practical use to the wizarding world, Professor Howin's character was leaked on January 17, 2023 as part of the devastating art book leak.

Professor Chiyo Kogawa

Subject(s): Broom-riding

House: Tengu

Misidentified by many YouTube reaction commentators as a "student playing Quidditch" because she appeared quite prominently on a broom in front of the Quidditch pitch, the "brooms" or "flying" professor first appears at the table in the Main Hall during the sorting ceremony just behind the headmaster. Her name appeared in the Great Art Book Leak of January 17th, 2023.

She is described as "loud" owing to her need to boysterously communicate across a Quidditch pitch. Her sense of fair play is all-consuming and her wrath against those who cheat is legendary.

Professor Mudiwa Onai

Subject(s): Divination

It has been confirmed in a Twitter post on October 5th, 2022 that the Gryffindor companion Natsai Onai was granted acceptance to Hogwarts as part of the deal her mother inked with her friend Matilda Weasley to become the professor of divination. They are both originally from Matabeleland in Africa where, prior to transferring to Hogwarts, Natsai was enrolled at Uagadou--the largest wizarding school in the world.

Professor Onai's life is full of tragedy. Her husband was murdered causing her deep sorrow. One manifestation of this grief is her refusal to use her animagus talent--that of an African fish eagle.

She is voiced by actress Kandace Caine.

Professor Abraham Ronen

Subject(s): Charms

House: Slytherin

We actually meet the charms professor and hear his voice during the course of the gameplay reveal trailer. His name was announced during the AutoDesk event on August 3rd, 2022. Further information came out that November. He is described as "jovial and lighthearted". He is an advocate for extra-curricular activities, a noted Slytherin, an avid gobstone player, and a fan of enchanted oragami. His teaching style has been described as "unorthodox".

Professor Satyavati Shah

Subject(s): Astronomy

House: Ravenclaw

Other than her name, almost nothing is known about this teacher. The name was first revealed on January 11th, 2022 as part of the "voice-over acknowledgements"--a series of Twitter posts showcasing the voice actors who contributed to the game. However, the confirmation that this is a fully voice-acted NPC (by voice actress Sohm Kapila) also confirms that students will be able to take Astronomy as a class during the course of the game.

Professor Aesop Sharp

Subject(s): Potions

House: Slytherin

We actually meet the potions professor and hear his voice during the course of the gameplay reveal trailer, though his name was not revealed officially until December 2nd, 2022. Described as gruff and astute, Sharp is a former auror who was wounded in action. Rather than sit at a government desk for a living, he left to join Hogwarts as a teacher.

Carriage Driver

We first see the Hogwarts carriage driver during the original announce trailer. Later, during the AutoDesk event on August 3rd, 2022, this NPC was confirmed when his title appeared in a drop down list.

Caretaker Gladwin Moon

We know of the existance of the caretaker only because of the art book leak on January 20th, 2023. He is described as dapper and pompous--the exact opposite of what you would expect from the caretaker of a school hosting seeral hundred students. He has a debilitating childhood fear of demiguises and possibly a small drinking problem.

Gamekeeper

First appearing during the gameplay reveal trailer in March 2022 (where he was identified in the close captioning as "Angry Man"), the unnamed gamekeeper was a primary character in the Sebastian Dark Arts trailer after following the MC and Sebastian into the Forbidden Forest to see what they were up to. It has been speculated, though not confirmed, that he is related in some way to Sebastian and his sister.

Hospital Matron Noreen Blainey

House: Hufflepuff

Relatively new to the healing profession, Nurse Blainey has been tasked with not only healing those students who find themselves injured during secret duels and falls from stairways with no railings, but she must also retrofit a hospital wing that has fallen into serioius disrepair. Her existence in the game was confirmed via the art book on January 20, 2023.

Head Librarian Agnes Scribner

The librarian appears in both the gameplay reveal trailer (when Sabastian is caught sneaking in the restricted section...AGAIN!) and in a promotional screenshot which first appeared on the Hogwarts Legacy Twitter account. Her name was part of the art book leak. She is a stickler for the rules but is eager to help students to learn and succeed in their classwork and projects. As you can imagine, a poltergeist who haunts the school and enjoys throwing things would not be this woman's cup of tea.

The Sorting Hat

It's a hat. It sorts people. I'm not sure what else you're looking for here.

Ghosts

The following is a list of ghosts known to be in the game:

  • Anabelle
  • Bloody Baron, murderer and huntsman
  • Cuthbert Binns, professor of History
  • Eddie Cleaver
  • Fastidio, poltergeist who haunts the basement of Stitches and Draughts
  • Fat Friar, house ghost of Hufflepuff
  • Gray Lady
  • Peeves, poltergeist who haunts Hogwarts
  • Richard Jackdaw, former student
  • Sir Dumfrey Westland, huntsman
  • Sir Gareth Seaford
  • Sir Gregor McQueen
  • Sir Nestor Amset, lowly huntsman
  • Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington, also known as "Nearly-headless Nick", house ghost of Gryffindor
  • Sir Patrick Delaney-Podmore
