Locations: Hogwarts Interior

The school itself has dozens if not hundreds of locations to explore and visit for classes and personal time. The following is a list of areas and nooks within the walls of Hogwarts School.

Athenaeum

Location: library, restricted section, subterranean level four

This location is full of ancient magic and can be found beyond the interruption by Peeves.

Bathrooms

Locations: Various

You may think this is odd, but the crew at Hogwarts are incredibly proud of their indoor plumbing setup. This is extremely rare to find in the 1890s.

  • chart room, east complex, ground floor, just inside entrance from suspension bridge (both witches' and wizards')
  • second-floor girls' lavatory (with secret connection to Chamber of Secrets)

Chamber of Secrets

It has been confirmed that the Chamber of Secrets was not included in the game to prevent users from killing the basilisk.

Classrooms

Locations: Various

While there are certainly dozens if not hundreds of classrooms throughout the castle, we can confirm the following classrooms based on marketing footage provided by Avalanche:

  • Astronomy (the top floor of the astronomy tower)
  • Charms (west complex, south wall, above the DADA classroom)
  • Defense Against the Dark Arts (against the south wall of the west complex next to the stained-glass windows of two wizards duking it out)
  • Herbology (greenhouse classrooms I & II, east side of the greenhouse complex)
  • History (ground floor of the west complex against the west wall overlooking the quad)
  • Potions (Location Unknown)
  • Transfiguration (beside the transfiguration courtyard in the west complex)

Note: broom-flight and beast classes are held outdoors at various locations, though beast class has a pavilion near "Hagrid's hut".

Clocktower Storage

Location: Behind and beneath the clock.

This area grants access to the inner workings of the clock. There is a floo flame node here in the Crossed Wands dueling club area.

Dormatories and Common Rooms

Locations: Various

Each of the four Hogwarts houses has a segregated residential area within the castle for members of that house. Each member of the house has a password to enter their specific house area. A common room is simply the primary area where all housemates are able to congregate and the dormatories are for personal items, grooming, and slumber.

  • Gryffindor (East complex along south wall just behind the clocktower)
  • Hufflepuff (underground, next to the kitchens)
  • Ravenclaw (they have their own tower attached to the east-complex near the gorge)
  • Slytherin (located in the old dungeons, partially beneath the waters of the Black Lake)

Central Hall

Location: West complex just behind doors to greenhouse complex and immediately adjacent to library

Also known as "Grand Central Station" to the cool kids, we first saw this area during the first gameplay showcase tour. It provides access to the transfiguration courtyard, the greenhouse complex, the library, the potions classroom, and the viaduct entryway. There is also a door to the elevated walkway that takes students directly to the DADA Tower.

Grand Stairwell

Location: Directly south of the Great Hall

On October 18th, 2022, it was confirmed via a video tweet that the iconic "grand staircase" is in Hogwarts Legacy. In response to a comment on YouTube, a former dev explained that while the book does explain that the staircases move at random, doing so in the game interfered with a user's ability to navigate the school in a timely fashion, so the developers settled on changing the design to simply extrude and then retract steps from the central column as the main character approaches.

There is a statue to the architect who built much of the school just off the stairwell on one of the upper levels and the entire stairwell is covered with portraits of witches and wizards who once walked the halls themselves.

Great Hall

Location: ground floor to the rear of the viaduct courtyard building near the Grand Stairwell

This is the primary dining area and general assembly area for the school. It appears to have seating for approximately 200 students. This room plays host to the sorting hat ceremony at the start of each school year or as needed. There is a large and ornate stained glass window at the head of the room and a stairwell leading down to the kitchens in the southeast corner of the room.

House Points Hall

Location: Just outside of the door to the Great Hall and just inside the door from the Viaduct Courtyard

The house point hourglasses keep track of the currently rewarded points for each of the Hogwarts houses as part of the annual House Cup competition. They were one of the points of interest during the tour given as part of the first gameplay showcase video, though the devs present in that same video mentioned that the hourglasses were just for show and that there was no active house cup points mechanic incorporated into the game.

Kitchen

Location: Below the Great Hall

This is where the house elves prepare the food for the student body and professors. We also know that the Hufflepuff common room is nearby and may have a shortcut entrance to the kitchens from the main communal area.

Library

Location: Western buildings just inside the quad entrance

This is where students go to study their coursework when outside of class. It contains hundreds of volumes, a restricted section that is forbidden to students, and is occasionally haunted by Peeves the Poltergeist. During the "Accio" animation posted on January 9th, 2023, we see that the library is divided into multiple sections as part of their book classification system. Exterior windows for the library are only located on the second floor and look out over the greenhouses.

There are several interesting features of the library, but none is more notable than the restricted section. The key to the restricted section is in the librarian's desk. If you pal around with Sebastian Sallow, his companion quest line will take you into the restricted section. Within the restricted section there is a chest just inside the gate to the right and a stairwell heading down into the lower levels. Those subterranean levels are patrolled by ghosts.

Map Chamber

Location: Deep subterranean level near Slytherin dormatory
THIS ENTRY WOULD BE CONSIDERED A MAJOR PLOT SPOILER

This area was seen first during the gameplay reveal trailer as Professor Fig and the main character are walking across a floor in which a three-dimensional, bright blue map of the local area is inlaid. This same room was once again seen during the "Overture to the Unwritten" music video which premiered on December 5th, 2022. The room features an entire wall of arch mirrors, though it is unclear at this time where those portals will take you and if those portals are part of the overworld immediately surrounding Hogwarts or if, in fact, they take you to other "overworlds".

The room also includes four portraits of "The Keepers", who understand the ancient magic found inside of the main character and try to help the main character control this powerful skill. There is a pensieve here. Other elements found in the room, such as the tower of flame, reflect the same focus on the elements that we see in other parts of the game--such as in each of the four Hogwarts houses.

Prefects' Bathroom

Location: On a high floor just below the hospital wing

This room is off-limits to non-prefect students and is one of several perks enjoyed by those students who are deemed worthy to hold the title of "prefect". It includes dozens of water taps, a mural of a mermaid, and a diving board.

Room of Requirement

Location: Exact location unknown, though within the west complex by the Astronomy Tower

This area serves as a production center for the main character. This room allows access to three vivariums in which the main character can collect, heal, and rehabilitate various magical creatures. The room also provides crafting stations at which users can brew potions, chop ingredients, grow plants, create fertilizer for speeding up growth, research magic, and more.

While the RoR is called a "room", it actually consists of multiple rooms and "mirror arches" to the vivariums. One of these rooms is known as the Room of Hidden Things.

Transfiguration Courtyard

Location: Eastern wall of the west complex overlooking the gorge

Also known as "Oggy's Courtyard", it is composed of three walls of the school and a cloister. This is where Nelly Oggspire tells you about the Daedalian keys. This courtyard was confirmed during the first gameplay showcase as part of the Hogwarts tour. During that tour, Boston identifies it verbally as "the transfiguration courtyard" because it is directly next to the transfiguration classroom.

Apparently this is where Draco will be turned into a ferret at some point in the future.

Viaduct Entrance

Location: just inside the doorway from the west side connection of the viaduct

The viaduct spans the east and west complexes of the school. To the east, it connects to the viaduct courtyard. To the west, it meets the west complex directly. Through those large doors is this entry space, full of tons of light and access to both viaduct towers as well as the Central Hall.
